Destination Details Bijapur

Destinations » KARNATAKA » Bijapur

Bijapur Bijapur was once the capital of the Adil Shah dynasty (1489 to 1686) and its charm lies largely in the architectural legacy from those days. Bijapur, is an ancient town situated located at a distance of 613 kms northwest of Bangalore City and about 486 kms from the city of Mumbai. The city is famous for its monuments that are excellent examples of South Indian style of Islamic architecture. Bijapur’s most famous monument is the Gol Gumbaz. The Ibrahim Rauza,The Nakkar Khana museum, the Asar Mahal (palace) with its lovely frescoes, the Sherza Burj (Lion Gate) with an enormous 55-ton cannon are among the amazing structures around the Gol Gumbaz. The Jami Masjid close to it is thought to be the most beautiful mosque in south India. The Citadel in the centre of town though mostly in ruins still has a unique charm.

Places to Visit

  Gol Gumbaz
An epitome of architectural wizardry with a diameter of 44 meter, this gigantic mausoleum of Mohammed Adil Shah, has to its credit the second largest dome in the world after that of St. Peter’s in Vatican City. One striking feature of the dome is that it is not supported by a single pillar. It also has another astonishing facet, a whispering gallery, where a message carries through 38 meters repeating 11 times. Even the smallest sound is reverberated to the other side of the Gombuz.

  Ibrahim Roza
The Ibrahim Roza mausoleum is considered to be one of the most finely proportioned Islamic monuments in India. The handiwork of expert Iranian artisans, this square enclosure consist the tombs of Ibrahim Adil Shah II and his family. This monument, which is believed to have inspired the creation of the Taj Mahal at Agra, is noted for its striking symmetry of proportion, is one of the few monuments in Bijapur with substantial stone filigree and other decorative sculptural work. This whole structure lies above a basement which houses secret passages (used to store munitions and food) and also holds living quarters for the cavalry, with stables opposite.

  Malik-e-Maidan
\'Malik-E-Maidan\' meaning the \'lord of the battlefield\' is the largest medieval cannon in the world, fourteen feet long and weighing about 55 tons. Perched on a platform especially built for it, the cannon\'s nozzle is fashioned into the shape of a head of a lion crushing an elephant to death with its huge jaws. A unique feature of this legendary gun is that it is always cool to touch even under the blazing sun.

  Jumma Masjid
The Jumma Masjid which is a visual delight with its graceful arches, aisles, halls, intricate designs, and large crowning onion dome, spreading over an area of 116300 square feet .The Masjid carefully preserves a Quran with verses inscribed in letters of gold. Also dating back to the period of Adil Shah, this is the largest Masjid in the region.
